There is an interesting history to the Cambodia gambling dens that reside just across the dividing line from next door Thailand, in which gambling den betting is against the law. Eight gambling halls are anchored in a relatively tiny location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia casinos is in a prime destination, a 3 to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal capital acquired from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of controls constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mostly Thai; however, funding sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and despite the fact visas are apparently needed to cross, there are ways around this, as is true of many borders.
The 1st Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just 1 casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked boat gambling den, contains 150 slot machine games and 60 gaming tables. The Naga river boat is open all hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. There are 150 slot machines and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machines and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and 96 table games, including 87 punto banco (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and 66 of the common table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational vacation and hotel building that highlights numerous conveniences on top of the gambling hall, which contains 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machines and 88 tables.
